What Does a Modern Chiropractor Actually Do? A Look at Evidence-Informed Chiropractic Care
When many people hear the word “chiropractor,” they immediately think of spinal adjustments.
While hands-on treatment can be one part of chiropractic care, modern chiropractic practice is much broader than adjustments alone.
At Verve Movement in Westboro, Ottawa, our approach to chiropractic care combines hands-on treatment with education, exercise, movement strategies and, when appropriate, acupuncture and Shockwave Therapy. The goal isn't simply to treat a painful area—it is to understand what may be contributing to your symptoms and help you get back to the activities that matter to you.
Chiropractic care is more than an adjustment
Chiropractic care is commonly associated with spinal manipulation or mobilization. These techniques can be useful for some people with certain musculoskeletal conditions, particularly when used as part of a broader treatment plan.
But an adjustment isn't a universal solution.
Current evidence-informed musculoskeletal care increasingly emphasizes a combination of:
Appropriate clinical assessment
Patient education
Exercise and physical activity
Manual therapy when indicated
Self-management strategies
Gradual return to meaningful activities
Shared decision-making between practitioner and patient
This means your chiropractor may use hands-on treatment during your appointment, but they may also spend significant time helping you understand your symptoms and determining what you can do between appointments.
What happens during a chiropractic appointment?
Your first appointment typically begins with a conversation about what brought you in.
Your chiropractor may ask about:
Where you're experiencing symptoms
When they started
What makes them better or worse
Your work, training and daily activities
Previous injuries
Your goals
What activities you want to return to
A physical assessment may then look at movement, strength, mobility and other relevant factors.
Importantly, the assessment isn't simply about finding something that is “out of alignment.”
Human movement is complex. Pain can be influenced by tissues, loading, sleep, stress, previous injury, activity levels and many other factors. A good assessment considers the whole picture.
Where do adjustments fit in?
Spinal manipulation and other manual techniques may be incorporated when they are appropriate for the individual.
The goal isn't to repeatedly “put your spine back into place.”
Instead, manual therapy can be used as one tool to help manage symptoms and potentially make movement more comfortable in the short term.
That can create an opportunity to work on the things that tend to produce longer-term improvements—such as gradually increasing strength, capacity, mobility and confidence with movement.
Exercise is an important part of care
At Verve, we don't want your progress to depend entirely on coming back for another appointment.
Exercise and physical activity can play an important role in managing many musculoskeletal conditions and improving physical capacity.
Depending on your needs, your chiropractor may prescribe exercises targeting:
Strength
Mobility
Motor control
Balance
Load tolerance
Core and trunk capacity
Sport-specific demands
Your program should also be realistic.
The best exercise plan isn't necessarily the most complicated one. It is one you understand, can perform safely and can actually incorporate into your life.
What about acupuncture?
Acupuncture may also be incorporated into chiropractic care when clinically appropriate.
Evidence for acupuncture varies depending on the condition being treated, but it can be a useful adjunct for some people experiencing musculoskeletal pain.
At Verve, acupuncture isn't positioned as a standalone “fix.” Instead, it can be one component of a broader treatment strategy that may also include education, exercise and manual therapy.
Why multidisciplinary care matters
One of the advantages of receiving care at a multidisciplinary clinic is that you don't necessarily have to figure out which profession you need on your own.
At Verve Movement, our practitioners work collaboratively across disciplines, including chiropractic care, registered massage therapy, physiotherapy, kinesiology and acupuncture.
Sometimes your chiropractor may identify that another practitioner would be better suited to address a particular aspect of your goals.
That's not a failure of chiropractic care.
It's good clinical collaboration.
A modern approach to chiropractic care
The question isn't simply:
“Can a chiropractor adjust me?”
A better question is:
“What approach makes sense for my symptoms, goals and situation?”
Modern chiropractic care can include hands-on treatment, but it can also involve education, exercise, movement and collaborative care.
At Verve Movement in Westboro, Ottawa, our approach is designed around helping you understand your body, manage your symptoms and build the capacity to move with confidence.
Move. Recover. Repeat.
